Workshop Preparation of Teaching Materials for Indigenous Language Teaching and Revitalization Programs
During the second day of the workshop, we will focus on second language (L2) materials. We will start with a discussion about the learning needs of students that cannot communicate in the target language. We will then see how learners develop their L2 knowledge and how we can facilitate their learning process. We then move to a brief description of revitalization programs that focus on communities where the language is no longer spoken. We will analyze some second language materials and their properties, and we will discuss ways in which we can start preparing them. Finally, we will share some ideas on the challenges of establishing second language programs in indigenous contexts and how to overcome them. At the end of both days, participants will be invited to prepare a list of next steps they would like to take to prepare materials for their local communities / schools.
