Literacy in Indigenous Languages

TIn this workshop, we will discuss the preparation of pedagogical materials for indigenous language programs in formal educational settings. On the first day, we will talk about literacy development in communities where the native language is still spoken. We will start with an analysis of the type of student who can benefit from such literacy programs. We will follow up by answering some practical questions that frequently show up in indigenous language contexts, such as: (1) How to put together a project to prepare pedagogical materials? (2) Where should we start in the case of languages that have no materials available? (3) What kind of pedagogical material can support the work of language teachers? (4) Who is the student who needs a literacy program in an indigenous language? (5) How can a material be incorporated into a language program? Through activities and examples, we will answer these and other questions about literacy materials for indigenous languages in Brazil. The goal is to provide an initial background to participants so that they can start and/or improve their own pedagogical material projects in their languages.
